The Spotswood Enterprise Hook & Ladder is mourning the passings of two of its life members within the span of
two weeks. Full department honor guard, fire department memorial services, and the Last Alarm was sounded
for Ex-Chief John "Jack" McDonald and Life Member Richard Lohr.

Spotswood Enterprise Hook & Ladder Company Mourns the Passing of Life Member Joe Mahoney

AGE: 81 SPOTSWOOD
Joseph E. Mahoney died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was
81. Born in West Orange, he lived in East Orange before moving to Spotswood 55 years ago.
Prior to retiring in 1992, he was a master sheet metal journeyman and a member of Sheet Metal Workers
Union, Local 25. Mr. Mahoney was a WWII Navy Veteran, and a member of the Navy Memorial, Washington,
D.C., and Sampson Boot Camp Association. He was also a member of Spotswood Fire Department and its
Exempt Firemen Association.
Surviving are a wife of 59 years, Doris Sovick Mahoney; two sons, Richard Mahoney and his wife, Ruth of
Parlin, and Donald Mahoney and his wife, Marianne of Bethel, Conn.; a sister, Gloria Andreski; three
grandchildren, Brian, Jennifer and Keith, and two great-grandsons, Devin and Brett.

Thackara

WESLEY J. THACKARA
AGE: 52 SPOTSWOOD
Wesley J. Thackara, passed away peacefully Monday, May 11, 2009, at home, surrounded by his family. He
was 52. Born in Perth Amboy, he lived in East Brunswick and Old Bridge before moving to Spotswood 20 years
ago. Wes was the Director of Maintenance at Summerhill Nursing Home, Old Bridge for 25 years. He was an
honorary member and department photographer of the Spotswood Fire Department and its Model "T"
Recycling Team.
He was predeceased by his father, William, who died in 2006. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Cindi Becker
Thackara; his son, Firefighter Jason Thackara; his daughter, Lindsay; his mother, Lorraine Zwoyer Thackara of
Venice, Fla.; a brother, Jeffrey of Hillsborough; and a sister, Lisa Bailey and her husband Chip of Apalachicola,
Fla.

Spotswood Celebrates the Dedication of its New Engine 71-1 and Dodge Durango Chief's Vehicle

The Spotswood Fire Department with the help of many neighboring fire companies and town residents helped
christen and dedicate its two new units, Engine 71-1 a 2009 Pierce Quantum 1500 gpm Rescue Pumper, and a
2008 Dodge Durango SLT Chief's vehicle, on a soggy and humid August morning.
Monsignor Joseph Curry of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church led the crowd of over 100 in prayer and
blessed the vehicles, and Ex-Chiefs Vern Lohr and Harvey Uhl broke the champagne on the Durango which
was dedicated to all the Ex-Chiefs of the Department. Engine 71-1 was dedicated to "all those who preserve
the freedom of this nation, in which this truck will serve" and was christened by the Bove and Marciniak, fire
department families who have active service military members in them, and the Gonzalez family whose son
Michael was killed in action in Iraq in 2008.
After the conclusion of the ceremony, a long precession of fire apparatus including: Monroe District 1, East
Brunswick District 1, Helmetta, Jamesburg Fire, Jamesburg First Aid, Milltown, Highland Park, Laurence Harbor,
South River, NJ State Forest Fire Service, Madison Park, South Amboy, Sayreville - President Park, and Ferrel
Fire Department from Elk Township, Gloucester County drove in a motorcade throughout Spotswood ending up
at the Knights of Columbus on Crescent Avenue, where fun was had by all in a celebration party.
