The Spotswood Enterprise Hook & Ladder Company mourns
the passings of Ex-Chiefs Bill Gilliland and John Fitzpatrick

Within less then a week of one another, two of our Ex-Chiefs and Life Members Bill
"Gilli" Gilliland and John "Fitz" Fitzpatrick, have answered the final alarm.

Ex-Chief Gilliland was the oldest living member of the Department when he passed away
at the age of 94 on April 27, 2016.  Gilli was Chief in 1953 and 1954 and a member of
the department for almost 69 years joining in 1947 after being discharged from the
Army during World War II.  While his health steadily declined over the past few years,
Bill made every effort to attend our monthly meetings until recently.  He was laid to rest
on Tuesday, May 3rd, and will be greatly missed.

While at the funeral for Ex-Chief Gilliland we received word that Ex-Chief John Fitzpatrick
also had passed away after a prolonged illness.  Fitz joined the Department in 1973 and
served as Chief in 1980.  John was instrumental in overseeing the major renovations to
the firehouse during his tenure as Chief transforming the back part of the building from
a gymnasium into the banquet hall, firefighters lounge, and upstairs offices that exist
today.  Fitz was also a long time Treasurer of both the Fire Department and the
Spotswood Firemen's Relief Association.

Funeral arrangements for Ex-Chief Fitpatrick are as follows:
Wake services will be Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Brunswick Memorial Funeral Home,
454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick from 2-4 and 6-9pm with Fire Department services
being at 7:30 pm.  Funeral services will be on Friday, May 6th. Funeral services will be
held on Friday at 10:15 AM at the funeral home, followed by a 11am Memorial Liturgy at
St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Spotswood. Cremation will be private.

May both these great men rest in peace.
